Week 6- Chernobyl

This weeks piece was to be done from a virtual tour of Chernobyl in Ukraine and we were to create a highly atmospheric piece using an appropriate colour pallet to reflect a certain mood created in the scene. Through looking around on the visual tour a highly sombre and apocalyptic mood was present and I wanted to capture this in my drawing by using a yellow tones and dulled colour pallet. In this task I thought carefully about what colours I would be using to convey a mood and after choosing what scene I would be drawing I opted for a natural tones pallet which was heavily desaturated to convey a more sombre air to it. as for my lighting set up I wanted to use very soft lighting as of that of an overcast day in order to further support the mood. Therefore there wouldn't be a lot of intense highlights on any of the elements.

I started by sketching out some perspective lines for my building to follow so that I could create an accurate representation. This was in 2 point perspective and I wanted to get it as accurate as possible to make it look convincing. I also began to colour in the natural forms in the front centre of the images as I wanted to adjust my colour pallet accordingly. I struggled a lot to get in the details of all the foliage as I started the piece smaller than I should have since coloured pencils are harder to use accurately than normal pencils.

I really enjoy colouring with coloured pencils seen as you can create a wide range of moods by thinking about the colour pallet of a piece. I really wanted to express the murky and sad atmosphere around the location and the disaster that occurred there. I wanted to put a lot of focus on the wildlife that was reclaiming the abandoned building.

Overall I think if I had spent a but longer on this piece I could have added some smaller details into the foliage and if I had worked on a bigger scale also. However I am very happy with the desaturated colour pallet that I picked for this task as I think it represents the mood of the area well.
