First term review- 3D module

As my first term as a game art student at DMU is over and I have completed the shop front brief for 3D modelling, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on my learning through out this time. I have a learnt and tried out so many new skills within this time, especially as this was my first big set brief I was excited and also a little nervous to get stuck into all the new skills. When making my shop front I experienced challenges when it came to using new software such as unreal engine. I found getting my head around all the new tools available to me in unreal engine quite challenging at first and I can see that there is still so many more great things I will be able to learn how to do in this software. I really enjoyed working in unreal and would really love to further explore the possibilities I have using shaders and PBR. Creating and thinking of an aesthetic lighting scene was another new skill which I learnt in this process, I thoroughly enjoyed this new step in the workflow as it presented ways to further being out creative thinking in order to accentuate the model in an appealing way.

This term I had a lot of fun creating my bubble tea shop as it reflected some of my own personal interests whilst also teaching me new skills. I found sticking to a good schedule was very important when doing this task as I realised I was spending too long on certain aspects such as the hand painting textures. Next time I would have made more of an effort to split my time more evenly in order to get a better more all round finish to my work. I stuck to a good schedule working each day to get this done in time for the deadline leaving myself enough time to make mistakes and fix them as I learnt new skills. A long with splitting g my time better next time I would also like to focus more on the technical side of my modelling. Such as clean organisation in Unreal, optimisation of my model and also better knowledge of texture sizes as this is something which brought me down. Next time I will think more carefully about work standard practises and try harder to implement them into my own work.

Overall this term has been a challenging and interesting learning curve for me and I cant wait to grow more as a 3D artist and learn many more skills to come.
